Approximately 445 landfill gas (LFG) energy projects were operational in the United States in December 2007. These projects generate approximately 11 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, delivering 236 million cubic feet per day of LFG to direct-use applications. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 535 additional landfills are candidates for LFG projects.

You can find information on LFG energy, current projects and much more on the EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Web site. LMOP is a voluntary assistance and partnership program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable, green energy source. The program helps businesses, states, energy providers, and communities protect the environment and build a sustainable future by preventing emissions of methane through the development of LFG energy projects.
